2021 Ranked🐂
You can appreciate what they were going for here. A sort of JCVD for the ageing Korean TV/film star set. Cha In-Pyo is a good sport in playing a washed-up version of himself. When his fictional counterpart chooses to take a shower in a girl's school gym, you can probably see exactly where this leads. That's right: he gets stuck underground after the building collapses. I kid you not. That's about the last thing to really happen for another 70 minutes, as really broad slapstick gives way to a bizarre series of conversations, cutaways and dick jokes. I would be forgiving and say that this would work better if you knew Cha's filmography, but you could pretty much replace the lead with anybody of a similar vintage. Not a great start to 2021 in film.

One occasional joy of the increasingly uninspiring Netflix project is coming across a film with absolutely zero interest in appealing to an international audience. It's a nice change of pace from the sense of uniformity I sometimes get from the most visible art house fare. What Happened to Mr. Cha?, a satire of the public image of Cha In-pyo, a real-life 90s TV icon who now finds himself struggling to prolong his time in the spotlight, plays exactly like something from that first camp. After going for a walk with his dog in a park, Cha finds himself in a predicament: does he draw negative attention to himself by admitting to breaking into an all-girls school to use the washroom,…

Somewhat entertaining, Cha In-Pyo does a good job with this film, there is some fun editing and some sequences that feel more absurd.

I mean, it's not the worst thing ever made. But what was the point?

First 2021 movie of 2021!
Maybe it’s a cultural difference, but for a supposed comedy, I didn’t find What Happened to Mr. Cha?very funny. It has its moments, surely, but it also has that annoying style of camerawork and editing from Korean television series I loathe so much. I also think I need some more context on Cha In-pyo. I’ve never heard of this man and since he plays a semi-fictionalised version of himself, some familiarity with his persona and previous works is probably required to truly enjoy this.
I can see what they were going for with this movie and there’s definitely potential, I just don’t think it’s for me.

Now this is a film that is absolutely all over the place thematically; What Happened to Mr. Cha follows Cha In-pyo, who is playing a satirized version of himself. A superstar actor past his prime, the film follows his life as he struggles to find new roles, that is, before tragedy strikes. Mr. Cha finds himself in a girl's high school shower room, after a hike leaves him too muddy to be seen in public (something that the film continually beats the viewer over the head with is that Cha is extremely careful about his public persona, to the point where he just comes off as full of himself). At about 40 minutes in, the building Cha is showering in…

Bit of a disappointing considering this was my first official 2021 released film but I mean it was fine. Nothing was too bad but nothing was that good either.

So happy this is my first 2021 film. This was so much fun. In-Pyo Cha is phenomenal, he gives such a perfect performance. The editing is weird but I thought it fit the quirkyness of the film.
This is definitely not going to be for everyone. If you don’t like the first 20 minutes, your not gonna like it overall. But I just vibed with it idk.
Also I just wanna complain for a sec because Tubi doesn’t have a download option for whatever reason. Needed something I could download, that’s why i interrupted Full moon week. Anyway on to Evil bong 5🤩 -

What Happened To Mr. Cha? is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. This is a South Korean comedy about a washed-up, self-centred actor who gets into a pretty serious accident which causes him to reflect on his life. It's an extraordinarily weird movie, and unlike anything I've ever seen, but unfortunately it doesn't manage to cross the threshold between just plain weird and weird but good.
I will say that the performances are pretty good in the movie. There's a lot of dry humour and a lot of jokes that come from how melodramatic some scenes are, and because of that the actors get to have a lot of fun with it. The guy who plays Mr.…
